I just wrapped up a three month internship with Tonic.com. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the site, it focuses on reporting “good” news only. It’s a cool concept– they highlight good work of all kinds, from that of non-profits, celebrities or everyday people. It’s a refreshing break from the stories of crime and corruption so prevalent on traditional news sites.
The people behind Tonic are what makes it so special, though. They created the program in which I participated, Tonic’s “Positively Good Writing Program,” to give aspiring journalists a chance to get their work out there. Dan Estabrook, senior editor, sent interns emails periodically checking on our progress, offering suggestions and giving positive feedback.
That kind of feedback is rare in the business world, so to get a “thank you” note for every piece I wrote really meant a lot to me. It also showed that Tonic’s message of good news was not just a front– those behind the scenes really practiced what they preached.
Do yourself a favor and head on over to Tonic.com– we could all use a little good news in our lives.
